Clothing Label Artwork: Size, Fold, Sewing and Care Information

A practical review of woven labels, printed care labels, artwork, sewing methods, country-of-origin information, packaging and compliance responsibility.

By · Supplier-published guidance

Short answer

A woven label carries the brand mark; it does not by itself satisfy textile information rules. Before ordering, fix the artwork, size, fold, sewing method and placement — and separately confirm who supplies the fiber content, care instructions and country-of-origin text for each destination.

A woven label is a branding element, not a substitute for all textile and product information. Before approving a label or packaging order, define the brand mark, size, fold, sewing method, fiber content, care instructions, country of origin, responsible business identity and destination-market requirements.

Choose a label format by use case

Woven damask, taffeta, printed satin, heat-transfer and exterior labels each have different detail, hand-feel, durability, edge and color behavior. The correct choice depends on artwork, garment contact, wash method, placement, quantity and compliance needs. A label name alone does not establish suitability.

Artwork and sample controls

Provide a vector logo where possible, the final physical size, thread or ink colors, fold type, sewing allowance, placement and size/care information. Tiny text, gradients, dense details and low-contrast artwork may need a different process. Approve a strike-off or sewn sample at actual size before production. Record the approved file and revision.

What information must a care label carry?

Textile labeling rules vary by destination, product, fiber, importer and sales channel. Requirements can include fiber content, care instructions, country of origin and an identity or registration number. US and EU rules are not interchangeable, and children’s products can create additional obligations. Use official guidance or qualified counsel; this article is not legal advice.

Ask who supplies the legally responsible text, who checks translation, where the label is sewn, whether it survives the intended wash and who owns a correction if the information is wrong. Keep the brand label separate from compliance content when the design requires it.

Keep packaging approval separate

For mailers, inserts, stock and packing instructions, use the POD labels and packaging checklist. Branded mailers, polybags, hangtags, stickers and inserts need material, dimensions, quantity, artwork, recycling or warning information and destination-market review. Plastic packaging and children’s products can have specific warning and labeling obligations. Do not describe packaging as “eco-friendly,” compliant or recyclable without evidence for the exact material and claim.

For label or packaging review, send the artwork and destination. Any sourcing, sewing, MOQ, compliance check or fulfillment scope remains subject to business confirmation.

Common questions

Which label type should I choose?

Woven damask, taffeta, printed satin, heat-transfer and exterior labels differ in detail, hand feel, durability, edge and colour behaviour. The right choice follows artwork, garment contact, wash method, placement, quantity and compliance needs — a label name alone does not establish suitability.

Does a brand label satisfy labeling requirements?

No. Textile rules vary by destination, product, fiber, importer and sales channel, and can require fiber content, care instructions, country of origin and an identity or registration number. Keep compliance content separate from the brand label where the design requires it.

Are US and EU label requirements the same?

No, they are not interchangeable, and children's products can create additional obligations. Use official guidance or qualified counsel; this article is not legal advice.

What artwork should I send for a label?

A vector logo where possible, the final physical size, thread or ink colours, fold type, sewing allowance, placement and the size and care information. Approve a strike-off or sewn sample at actual size before production, and record the approved file and revision.

Can I describe my packaging as eco-friendly?

Not without evidence for the exact material and claim. Branded mailers, polybags, hangtags, stickers and inserts also need material, dimensions, quantity, artwork and destination-market review, and plastic packaging or children's products can carry specific warning obligations.
